How do I get started?
There are two ways you can get started with us!
1. Come try a class! We offer a FREE try-out class in any of our locations. This gives you a chance to experience a live class, see our facility, meet our instructors, and see how you or your child like Jiu-Jitsu.
2. Choose one of our amazing online courses: Experience world-class instruction from the comfort of your home. Learn Jiu-Jitsu skill-building workouts and exercises from home. We mainly focus on improving the areas often neglected in training as conditioning, flexibility, strength, and more without needing a training partner.
I've booked my trial class, what is next?
Amazing! We are looking forward to having you at the academy. We ask you to come dressed and ready in workout clothes, bring a bottle of water and be on time. You will be getting an email with additional information after you have booked your appointment.
What will class be like?
We have new students starting every week and new students are welcomed to RABJJ Academy in a fundamentals class that is designed to introduce you to Jiu-Jitsu and take you through your first few steps on the mats.
Due to COVID-19, we have implemented some extra protocols. We have marked squares on the mats which are over 6ft apart. And classes are being run at reduced capacity.
Classes follow the simple structure of a Calisthenics like a warm-up, a technical part of the class where the instructor is introducing technique/concepts, and students practicing the technique. We have now individual training buddies available for kids and adults.
How about pricing, schedule and more membership questions?
Great question! When you come in for your free trial class, our team will be available to answer any questions you might have regarding our prices, schedule, programs, uniforms, memberships, and more.
I want to sign up my whole family! Do you offer any discount?
We have been teaching Jiu-Jitsu classes for over 20 years and build a facility with families in mind! So the answer is yes! It is our main goal for our students to be able to enjoy the benefits of Jiu-Jitsu with their loved ones.
Do you train kids and adults separately?
Yes all our classes follow an age-appropriate and level appropriate curriculum.
Our age groups are:
Kids 4-6 years old
Jrs 7-15 years old
Adults 16 and up
Beyond age, we also separate classes by levels of experience where we can focus on simple introductory concepts when students are getting started and more advanced and complex techniques for our more experience students.
What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?
Jiu Jitsu is a Martial Art, developed by the Gracie Family in Brazil. The Gracies learned Jiu Jitsu from a Japanese Diplomat and evolved it into a whole new art which rather than focusing on punching and kicking as a means to self-defense, the major strategy was to take attackers to the ground and pin them or apply joint locks or strangleholds to immobilize the opponent.
Gracie/Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has been adopted by all branches of the armed forces as well as federal and local law enforcement agencies. The Gracies were dedicated family men who exemplified a healthy life-style and were distinct examples of courage, discipline, determination and have become an inspiration to people all over the world.
How is Jiu Jitsu different than Karate and Traditional Martial Arts?
Unlike Karate and other Martial Arts, the basic strategy is not to punch and kick in order to hurt or render your opponent unconscious but rather to neutralize, control and immobilize the attacker.
Much like wrestling, the Jiu Jitsu fighter looks to take his opponents to the ground where he looks to outmaneuver and pin or immobilize.
How can my child benefit from Jiu Jitsu?
Many parents seek our program because children are having problems with Bullying. Jiu Jitsu is extremely effective when it comes to Bullying not only because our students learn to defend themselves in a fight but the truth is the self-discipline and focus developed in training, allow kids/teens to carry themselves in a more confident and assertive manner.
Since our students learn to anticipate potentially dangerous situations, most times the battles with bullies don’t ever come to physical aggression.
The benefits of Jiu Jitsu go far beyond self-defense:
Developing a positive attitude and behavior
Goalsetting and achieving
improved behavior and self-control
How old does my child have to be to start Jiu Jitsu?
We recommend that kids start around 4-5 years old. Don’t worry even if it seems like there is no way your child can focus and follow a 30 min class you will be surprised after just a few lessons.
Will Brazilian jiu Jitsu teach me self-defense techniques?
Yes, with as little as 6 months of training a brand new student will become very effective should a self-defense situation happen.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has been proven among the most effective Martial Arts for self-defense. Jiu Jitsu techniques and tactics have been adopted by all 5 branches of the US Armed Forces. Federal and local Law Enforcement Agencies favor Jiu Jitsu over other Martial Arts because it favors controlling and immobilizing opponents over striking and inflicting damage.
Can you accommodate children with learning challenges?
Yes, Martial Arts are widely recommended for children with a learning disability as well as ADD and ADHD.
All children crave structure and consistency. Adults, too, thrive on ritual. Because Jiu Jitsu classes contain these elements of structure, consistency and ritual, training is very applicable to help bring an individual challenged by ADD/ADHD to develop greater organizational and executive functioning skills.
How will Brazilian Jiu Jitsu improve my appearance and my health?
Students begin training with different goals, varying from fitness to self-defense and weight loss. Many of our students were either bored at the gym or perhaps not getting the results they wanted. In Jiu Jitsu you work in a group setting, which helps you stay disciplined and committed.
Every class takes you through a fun and demanding workout that will help be in the best shape of your life while learning the most sought after self-defense method available.
Do I need to be in shape to start Jiu Jitsu?
Definitely not! You dot have to be in great to start but you will get in great shape when you start and stick to it. Our Basic Program Curriculum is designed to introduce a new student to Jiu Jitsu. A big part of the first few months of training is not only to learn the techniques but to develop the endurance to execute them over and over.
Many of our currents students put off training because they assumed they needed to be in shape, only to realize they wish they started sooner once they start coming to class.
Do you only train fighters?
We are all fighters but no. Although our Head Instructor is a former UFC fighter and coach to 2 UFC Champions, the vast majority of our students do not compete and classes are for recreational practitioners. We do host separate competition and MMA practices for our competitors and professional fighters.
Am I too old to train Jiu Jitsu?
No, Jiu jitsu is for everyone. Professor Almeida has Graduated Black Belts varying from UFC Champions to School teachers and even Grand Parents.

Our women are our most technical students. Our ground fighting techniques are unparalleled in rape prevention and abduction prevention. FBI, US Marshalls, State Police as well as local Law Enforcement have to learn these same techniques at their academies.
